The background to the Forscot project is quite simple and compelling:
- There are large, and growing, markets, for forest products in Europe with one of these markets being the UK
- There is a growing amount of harvestable Sitka spruce in the UK and especially in Scotland, which is ideal in quantity and quality for making various types of forest products. We believe this is a valuable national and natural resource which should be used to best effect
- The UK, especially, has large markets for forest products and much of these are supplied by imports creating an annual 7B €/£5B balance of payments deficit
- Forscot can offer a very high quality pulp, produced independently, with the benefit of much faster delivery times to European paper manufacturers
- The UK, including Scotland, has skilled and experienced people, capable of turning the Forscot idea into reality and making it a success
Together these factors combine to the powerful conclusion that now is an excellent time to invest in forest products manufacture in the UK.
